Learning Iethka - the Stoney Nakoda Language

Diamond Valley Sustainable Living Centre, Alberta. Photo by Jeff Nelson.

Yesterday we had our first class to learn Iethka, the language of the Stoney Nakoda people. This was an overview for a series of sessions from June until February 2024.

In addition to the overview and introductions, we started to learn how to say “good day” - Umba Wastitch (women) and Umba Wasteno (men).

16 people attended including Wayne, Regina, and Sam Wesley. Keith Lefthand was not able to attend - he is planning to attend some of the sessions in the future.

Next Session

The next session will be next Monday at 6 pm in Diamond Valley. A copy of the textbook, Îethka Îam, will available for people to buy.

In addition to learning more words of Iethka, Sam Wesley will give a demonstration of the grass dance.

Although this project is partially funded, donations are still required to pay teachers, speakers, knowledge keepers, and elders. Donations can be made in any of the following ways:

Special thanks to the following:

  • Keith Lefthand and Weasel Tail Enterprises
